This is a place to learn about knitting without needles. Those new to Loom knitting, rake looms, circle looms, knifty knitters and knitting boards have a place to learn as book author, Denise Layman, shares her thoughts on life and loom knitting. With the help of her husband, Brian Layman, she is building the site into one of the most unique knitting resources on the web.

BUT!!! You've come in through the back door!

Wordy Wednesday:That’s it.. I’m committed..

Filed at 9:55 pm under Knitting Without Needles by Denise

Or at least I should be…

I have one big knitting addiction. Briar Rose Fibers. I CANNOT no matter how resolute, walk past, enter and exit or otherwise glance at their booth at ANY festival without buying something.

DSCF1187

In fact, they know me on sight as ‘the birthday lady’ because I always spend my birthday cash at their booth at the Great Lakes Fiber Show. (and it doesn’t matter what festival they see me at; this nickname sticks..)

This has resulted in quite a collection of Briar Rose yarns, patterns and one very nice ceramic button.

DSCF1212

Thus far, how many projects have I made with my lovely Briar Rose Yarn? one.. ???oh wait.. you mean to say how many projects have I actually finished? well.. none..

There was that skirt I made with some of their Sonoma.. but it just wasn’t a good match. So it went in the frog pond.

Now.. now I have NEVER EVER committed so much to a project using the oh so lovely Briar Rose Yarn that I have actually CUT the yarn part way through a skein.

Tonight.

That

all

changes.

Tonight … I am digging in.. I am cutting the yarn.. there is NO TURNING BACK!

OK.. well I am off to get some calming tea or something.. I wasn’t even this nervous when I cut my first steek!

Anyone know about a 12 step program for Briar Rose Yarns?

Book Sightings!

Filed at 12:48 pm under Knitting Without Needles by Denise

I was totally surprised to see copies of the new book Loom Knitting Pattern Bookprominently displayed at my local Joann’s store the other day..

I was equally pleased to see it in my Crafter’s Choice email..

Cool eh?

Now I have some Tuesday To Do’s to do.. so keeping with the every other week schedule of How To’s Day.. I will have a new tutorial up next week!

Till then you can always look back at old ones on my tutorials page.. just click on the tutorials menu item up there under the header!!

There’s This Quilt…

Filed at 9:07 pm under Knitting Without Needles by Denise

I have a quilt upstairs on my quilt rack that is from my grandmother’s house. When I was young, used to wake up under it whenever I stayed there overnight. I love to walk by it and touch it. When I  touch it with my eyes closed I can envision myself back there.. upstairs in Nan Nan’s house, young and content.. ah to have that feeling again. Unfortunately because of the deteriorating condition of my grandmother’s quilt I can’t use it.

Sigh…

Then I saw this quilt today.. at Old Red Barn Co. and I knew, I knew just by looking at the photos of it that it would feel just like my grandmother’s quilt. And I closed my eyes and could feel the soft crinkly goodness of that quilt again in my hands, back when I was young and it was in it’s prime..

I want to win that quilt.. so here you can go look at it but man.. look out.. it’s MINE I tell you MINE MINE MINE!! I only post this so I can get extra entries!!

Woosh… Ok enough of that eh?

A Star is Born

Filed at 10:21 pm under Knitting Without Needles by Denise

Well here is that colorful project. This is what it looked like before we left for Richmond, and it’s what it looks like now!

DSCF3746

I hope to finish it up this week, write up the pattern, and make some bonus video tutorials..

I had hoped to finish it  before we left so I could use it as a travel pillow, but it just didn’t happen. Perhaps that would have helped me get some sleep on the road!  But I am still recovering from a little travel lag!

I will get things together tomorrow and hopefully wrap up some loose ends.

I Took My Kids to a Museum in a Strange City and Lived to Tell About it!*

Filed at 6:24 pm under Knitting Without Needles by Denise

Before we went to North Carolina to visit with Rhett and Link, I knew that meant that Brian would spend the day Thursday with them, working in the office. I was a little worried. There I would be in a strange place needing to keep my kids busy for at least 8 hours… or more. Things like that worry me.. I know they shouldn’t but they do..

What to do? Well in came Link with a suggestion or two, to go to a museum in Raleigh. He got me some directions off Google Maps and after spending a bit of the morning with Link’s wife and kids, (and waiting for Brian to bring me back my keys)off we went!

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh is awesome! Not only is it free.. but it is chock full of things to keep you and your kids busy for hours! If you are in the area go!!! And the other cool thing is they have the Dead Sea Scrolls there till December 28th. Which means this is the second time I have had the opportunity to see them, and have been unable to do it!! GRRR!

0717081439

So I enjoyed the day. It wasn’t too fun parallel parking in the city.. the public lot was full but we found a spot right in front of the governors mansion, of all places.

0717081145

It also took us 40 minutes to find our way out of Raleigh.. we skipped the second spot on our little mini tour..Pennell park, but then found it by accident and were then able to follow the directions out of town from there!

(*Despite the faulty directions Link gave me… mwah hahahah)
